The Rebis: Chariot has finally arrived
120 pages of art & creative writing from 28 contributors
Hello, friends.
Today is the day. I am excited to share that The Rebis: Chariot is now available to order. We will begin shipping at the end of November / early December!
For those of you who are new to this Substack (thank you for joining us!), The Rebis is an annual print anthology of original art and creative writing inspired by a single tarot card. In our second edition, we invited 28 writers, artists, and tarotists to explore their personal relationship with the Chariot as well as related cards, including the Tower and the Minor Sevens.
The result is a beautiful 8x10 book with a matte softcover, filled with 120 pages of personal essays, creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, prose, and artwork. There are multiple journal prompts and tarot spreads, a ritual guide, and an in-depth numerology overview of the Chariot. This issue features original watercolor paintings, illustrations, photography, collages, and two pieces of artwork that include QR codes with digital extensions.
Also, as part of this launch, our contributors put together a fun Chariot-inspired playlist on Spotify!
According to numerology, 2023 is the year of the Chariot (2+0+2+3=7, the Chariot is the seventh Major Arcana) — but that’s not the only reason I selected this card for this issue. After releasing the Wheel of Fortune last year, I questioned whether I had made the right choice in committing to this project. The challenges of running a small print journal felt heavy. In reflecting on what to do, I pulled the Chariot over and over again. The card urged me forward.
Eventually, the progression from Wheel to Chariot started to feel right. Just as the invention of the spoked wheel was critical for the creation of ancient chariots, the lessons within the Wheel provide scaffolding for the Chariot card.
There is an obvious relationship between fate (the Wheel) and free will (the Chariot). The Wheel is a card of change, of both expansion and contraction, and the charioteer must embrace this lesson if they want to progress, must learn how to discern what is within their control and what is not. As they begin to truly sit with and accept the (often uncomfortable) energy of change, the charioteer can move — move beyond what they’ve always known and experienced, move toward a different way of seeing, a different way of being.
Within the pages of The Rebis: Chariot, we deconstruct traditional meanings of the card, question words like “success” and “willpower” and soften into the delicate tension between surrender and control. This anthology is intimate and vulnerable, covering themes of desire, eroticism, transformation, and authenticity. Here, we reject dominant narratives. We center stories of self-discovery and honor our queerness. We invite destruction and embrace ego death. We go to sex camp. We renounce celebrity billionaire culture. We shatter our own expectations. We accept our beautiful contradictions.
The content is evergreen and timeless. It’s designed to be held and savored. We invite you to explore this at your own pace, whether that’s reading from cover to cover or revisiting the material whenever you pull the Chariot, Tower, or Minor Sevens.
Order your copy of The Rebis: Chariot today and it’ll ship out around the last week of November or the first week of December. Thank you in advance for your patience — I promise it’ll be worth the wait.
This publication is really meant to be experienced physically, but for those of you who live outside the U.S. and will therefore incur unreasonable shipping costs, there are now digital options available for purchase for both the Chariot and Wheel of Fortune. (I have researched international shipping and tried to find the best rates, but all of the options are absurdly expensive — I welcome tips from anyone who ships flat envelopes abroad!)
The Rebis is a not-for-profit project — we amplify underrepresented voices, pay artists and writers fairly for their work, and redistribute profits to movements for justice. I have always been committed to our mission but I am feeling a growing urgency around connecting art and liberation movements. We desperately need artists and writers to thrive, to be free to do their work, so that we may imagine new ways of existing in this world.
After accounting for operating expenses, profits from the sale of this publication are distributed equally between three nonprofits committed to reproductive justice and reparations: The Sogorea Te Land Trust; The National Network of Abortion Funds; and Liberated Capital. So far, we’ve been able to donate over $2300 through sales of The Rebis.
Deep and sincere gratitude to all of the contributors who chose The Rebis to be a safe harbor for their stories and art. A heartfelt thank you to Maria Minnis for being an outstanding guest editor and to Xaviera Lopez, Patricio Antonio, and Nick Jacobs for their creative work. This book would not be possible without every single artist and writer who has contributed their time and energy. Finally, I have so much love to my partners, friends, and chosen family for their unwavering support and belief in this publication.
Sincerely,
Hannah Eve
P.S. If you don’t already have a copy of our Wheel of Fortune edition, you can add that to your order for 60% ($17!!) off.
