The Rebis, reciprocity, and social justice
Hi friends,
I started The Rebis with the intention of building community around tarot and creativity — making space for poetry and art alongside personal and collective healing. Today, I’m reflecting on the founding principles for this publication and wanted to share them with you all.
The Rebis commits to amplifying and centering underrepresented voices, paying artists and writers fairly for their work, and redistributing profits to social justice causes.
After accounting for operating costs, profits from The Rebis will go to organizations committed to reparations and reproductive justice: The Sogorea Te Land Trust, an urban Indigenous women-led land trust that facilitates the return of Indigenous land to Indigenous people; The National Network of Abortion Funds, which works with over 80 organizations to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access; and Liberated Capital, a donor community and funding vehicle aimed at moving untethered resources to Black, Indigenous, and other people-of-color communities for liberation and racial healing.
On a personal note: I’ve been decolonizing my own tarot practice — for example, learning more about the exclusionary practices of the occult societies that popularized tarot, using decks that don’t exclusively feature white bodies, and moving beyond the masculine/feminine gender binaries that are so often present in the cards. I welcome discussion and feedback if anyone reading this wants to chat more about these topics. I recognize there is so much more work to do here. I’ve let perfectionism paralyze me in the past, but I’m learning how to keep going regardless, and not let the feeling of “not enoughness” prevent me from doing anything at all.
My intention for The Rebis is to hold space for awe, beauty, joy, and creativity, while also being committed to collective liberation.
Thank you for being here and for supporting the publication.
—Hannah
